Send with the document queue

  • 4 Min.

The document queue in Document Output reduces time wasted creating and sending documents from Business Central reports. When you send documents using standard Business Central functions, the process of initializing and rendering each row blocks you from moving onto other tasks. For anything more than a few reports, this time quickly adds up to many minutes simply waiting for the system to process. The benefit of the document queue is that documents can be marked for creation in the background of Business Central, and are then dispatched at any time.

Unhandled document cues in the Role Center

With Document Output, extra CueGroup sections are added to the Role Center. These include cues for unhandled documents, which link to lists of reports that can be processed using the functionality of Document Output.

Send to the document queue

From any of the CueGroups for unhandled documents, such as the Unhandled Sales Invoices, you can open, send or save individual documents, a filtered selection, or the whole list. For example, you could filter the list by Bill-to Name to see documents prepared for the same customer. Instead of individually sending or printing documents from this page, you can Send all to Queue for dispatching at another time.

From an individual opened report, you can also use the Queue E-Mail option to generate each each document and send it to the document queue.

The Document Queue Cue displays the number of documents that are in the process of being sent. If document queue is set to automatically process in the background of Business Central without further action from you, it's possible that you won't see documents in the queue because they can be processed quite quickly. However, you can also set the document queue to require manual dispatch if desired. The following lesson in this module covers automatic email jobs for dispatching the document queue.

Scenario

In this scenario video, a manager from the warehouse, Robin, has finished some sales shipments for one customer.

He needs to work on these tasks:

  • Filter the unhandled sales shipments list for the customer.
  • Send the selection from the list to the document queue.
  • Start the dispatcher from the document queue.
