Rearrange and split PDF documents
- 5 min.
“Sometimes we end up with PDF pages in the wrong order in the document journal, or that need to be combined or split manually. Up until now, I needed to use programs outside of Business Central to fix these problems and then resubmit the documents. Is there a smoother way?”
Ester, Accounts Payable at Cronus
Along with the automatic split and merge functions, Document Capture allows you to manually rearrange PDFs without leaving the document journal. These actions support document handling processes that:
- Make it easier for your approvers to quickly understand the context of expenses and purchases.
- Help bookkeepers to correctly enter lines in journals.
- Create clearer records for posted documents.
You can use the Split and Merge page to:
- Change the order of pages within a PDF.
- Merge PDFs into a combined document, or split one into separate documents.
- Rotate or delete a page.

In this scenario, you're preparing received PDF invoices for processing in the document journal. To complete this task, you'll use the actions available on the Split and Merge page.
Use the Split and Merge actions for received PDFs
From the document journal, open the Document action menu and use the Split and Merge action.
From the Split and Merge Documents page, you see all the pages of the PDFs currently open in the document journal. You have a range of actions available:
- Move pages up and down by selecting a line and using the relevant action.
- Split to create a document with a new document number and to restart the page numbers from the selected line.
- Merge pages by selecting multiple lines and using the Merge action.
- Rotate a page, which is useful especially for pages that have been manually scanned to create a PDF.
- Delete a page to remove blank or unnecessary pages from documents.
